Everything You Need to Know About Microblading Your Eyebrows

It doesn’t matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature. If you’re not satisfied with the ones you have, there are so many ways to update them, including brow gel, pencils, and even tattooing. But now there’s a very natural option that delivers semi-permanent results. Ladies, we’d like to introduce you to microblading. Unlike the sometimes Sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is more of an embroidery of trompe l’œil strokes that look just like real hairs.

Nadia Afanaseva, microblading expert and trainer at Eye Design New York gave us the 411 on the unique service, and after our talk there’s no surprise why so many women love it. “Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows,” she explained. The professional lash and eyebrow expert also revealed that those who just want to add a slight arch are also great candidates, and the results are a natural, undetectable fringe.

If you’re still not sure how the technique differs from tattooing, Afanaseva explained that “during the microblading process we use a special microblading pen to draw on individual strokes one by one.” It’s an extremely meticulous process that takes around two hours to complete. Since the results will last for up to three years before beginning to fade it’s good to know that the technicians pay so much attention to detail. “The first hour we’re drawing the shape in with removable pencil. That’s the longest part and the most important step. During this time, the best customized shape for every client is chosen.” The pro advises clients to be cautious of places that claim to complete the process in one hour. “It’s not a rushed procedure, it cannot be done in an hour.”

Before the microblading begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area to minimize discomfort, followed by a liquid anesthetic. If you’re worried that the process is painful, Afanaseva assures, “some clients may feel a slight discomfort, but it’s relatively painless.”

When you’ve tried every pencil, powder, pigment, gel, and stencil at Sephora and your brows are still sparse, microblading—a more permanent solution to thin brows—is the last-ditch-effort treatment that promises to change your brow life. The face tattoo technique isn’t as scary as it sounds. Here, we talked to New York City microblading guru Piret Aava, aka The Eyebrow Doctor, to find out everything you need to know about the treatment that beauty insiders (from Olivia Palermo to JR Smith) are already obsessed with.

Microblading is a form of tattooing

Unlike a regular tattoo, “microblading is a form of tattoo artistry where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a machine,” Aava explains. “I draw hair-like strokes with the tool to mimic natural hairs in your brows. Even though it’s not as deep as the regular tattoo, it’s still a tattoo because pigment is implanted under the skin.”

You need to prepare

If you drink a lot, take aspirin, or use retinol, stop one week before your treatment. “Retinol makes your skin thin and then you bleed a little more,” Aava says. “Avoid blood thinners, aspirin, and alcohol.”

It doesn’t hurt (too much)

Pain is relative. “Some feel more than others. Overall it feels like little scratches. You feel it, but it’s not unbearable. It’s not like having a baby,” says Aava, who preps her patients’ brows with topical numbing cream and tops up throughout the process to dull the discomfort.

Microblading takes time

“I don’t like to rush anyone,” says Aava, who blocks off two hours for new clients.

Aftercare is essential

That means protecting freshly bladed brows from all moisture–no sweaty workouts or washing your face with water. Some patients experience itching and redness during the first week, which Vaseline can alleviate. Brows will look slightly darker at first, but the color will fade 30 to 40 percent. Aftercare ointments are provided during your first appointment. “Overall they look great right away and you don’t have to hide,” Aava says. “Slight redness and mild swelling is normal.”

Results last up to three years

Depending on the skin and lifestyle, Aava’s clients come back for touch-ups once every six months.

Microblading is an investment

The first treatment can cost up to $900. While lower-priced services are available, Aava cautions against visiting inexperienced technicians. Remember, microblading is a form of tattooing.

DEFINE YOUR ARCHES
Extra definition like Camilla Belle’s will give your face an instant lift, and open up eyes. Find your natural arch by placing a finger above the outer half of your brow and lifting up the skin. “Your arch should be where your brow naturally bends,” says brow expert Tonya Crooks. Fill in your brows with a pencil, then pluck one row of hairs from the bottom, following your natural shape. Brush hairs upward with brow gel or clear mascara to hold and enhance the look.

GO THICKER
Take note of Mary-Kate Olsen’s bold brows. “Thick brows make your face look more youthful and can frame your eyes better,” says Crooks. Thicker arches work best on natural brows, so let all hairs grow in for three to four weeks before having a pro shape them. To fake fuller brows in the meantime, dip an angled brush into a matte shadow in a matching shade, or use a pencil to fill in large gaps. “Be sure to apply in short, light strokes, and follow your current shape for the most natural look,” suggests Kiehl’s grooming expert Soul Lee.

SHIFT YOUR SHADE
Made a major hair-color change like Drew Barrymore? Consider altering your brow hue with a tinted brow gel-it’ll coat each hair and “look more natural than powder or pencil, which can sit on skin,” says Lee. If you’re after a longer-lasting hue, think twice before experimenting at home. It can be risky to use permanent dye so close to your eyes, and it’s tricky to get the color just right.
